Early Life and Education
South African Zozibini Tunzi was born in Tsolo in 1993 to parents Philiswa Nodapu and Lungisa Tunzi. From humble beginnings, she rose to become one of the few black contestants to win.
The Miss Universe pageant and the first black woman to do so without altering her natural beauty, competing with afro-textured hair.
She was raised in the village of Sidwadweni and attended school there until around 2016 when she moved to Cape Town to attend the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
Zozibini, more commonly known as Zozi, gained a National Diploma in Public Relations Management and a Bachelor of Technology graduate degree in Public Relations Management and eventually took a position as a graduate intern at Ogilvy Cape Town.
Her natural posture, stature, and beauty enabled her to work as a model, which may have sparked her interest in pageantry.
Pageantry
She entered the world of beauty pageants at 25 when she auditioned for the Miss South Africa 2017 competition and became accepted as one of the 26 finalists.
While not placed in her first outing, Zozibini did not become discouraged. She entered again in 2019 and was confirmed one of the top 35 applicants in June of that year.
It was qualifying her to proceed in the competition. After further auditions, she was announced as one of the 16 finalists the following month.
The pageant finals were held in Pretoria on August 9th, and Zozibini progressed through the heats until she was crowned Miss Universe South Africa 2019 by her predecessor, Tamaryn Green.
The prizes were life-changing for Zozi as she received 1 million Rand, a new car, and the use of a luxury, fully furnished apartment for the duration of her reign.
More importantly, however, she also won the right to compete in the Miss Universe 2019 competition held in Atlanta, Georgia, later that year.
Miss Universe Pageant 2019
Zozi travelled to the United States of America in November of that year and took part in the first heats of the Miss Universe on December 6th, where she moved through the preliminaries and advanced to the finals on December 8th, which she won and was crowned by the outgoing Queen, Filipina, Catriona Gray.
Zozibini Tunzi was crowned Miss Universe 2019, becoming only the third South African woman to win the title.
The second black woman to win and
the first to win with afro-textured hair, her natural beauty, intelligence, and demeanour won her the title.
Reign as Miss Universe
Unfortunately, Zozi’s reign coincided with the global Corona Virus pandemic, Covid 19, and she settled into New York City, where she lived for the duration of her reign.
Travelling was incredibly difficult, especially in her early days of holding the title. Still, Zozi used her technology skills to reach out to the world, and once travel became possible again, she undertook as many trips as possible.
She travelled around the United States, visiting as many cities as possible for events and South Africa and Indonesia, where she crowned Ayu Maulida as Puteri Indonesia 2020.
Because of the pandemic, Zozi’s reign lasted for 525 days (almost one and a half years) due to the restrictions on events and competitions imposed by Covid. The longest-reigning Miss Universe ever.
Advocacy and Issues
During the question and answer phase of the Miss Universe 2019 pageant, Zozi stated that she grew up in a world where girls and women that looked like her, with skin and hair like hers, were never considered beautiful.
She implied how that affected and impacted girls in her country and worldwide. She closed with the statement,
” I think it is time that stops today. I want children to look at me and see my face, and I want them to see their face reflected in mine.”
