Early Life and Education

Born to Bennie Peters and Anne-Marie Steenkamp on 28 June 1995, Demi Leigh spent her childhood in a small town called Sedgefield in Western Cape. A few years after her birth, her parents split up and went on to marry other people.

The young beauty was and continues to remain close to her biological parents and step-parents. Demi-Leigh regards all four of her parents as her support structure and shares an exceptionally warm relationship with “both her mamas.”

While growing up in Sedgefield, the idyllic pace of life allowed her to enjoy the best of what Mother Nature had to offer.

By her admission, a hiking enthusiast and a beach bum, Demi Leigh gave up the relaxed life when she moved to a boarding school in a comparatively bigger town called George.

This is where the entrepreneurial bug bit her, which eventually led her to pursue and earn a Business Management degree from North-West University (Potchefstroom).

Pageantry

Demi Leigh got her first taste of the world of pageantry when her friends enrolled her in a school-level pageant as a prank.

This experience set the ball rolling as she participated in several contests, including Miss Teen South Africa in 2010, Miss Diaz in 2012, Miss NWU Varsity Cup in 2015, and Miss Varsity Cup in 2015.

After winning the Miss Varsity Cup Title, she focused on her studies and part-time work as a model for Boss Models and Vision Management.

In 2017, she took home the Miss South Africa crown, winning against 12 finalists. After that, she was supposed to represent her country in the Miss Universe and the Miss World pageant. But, since both events were scheduled to be held in November 2017, she finally chose the Miss Universe Contest.

Her fans already had a good idea that she would fare exceptionally well at the pageant, and she certainly made them proud by winning the title of Miss Universe.

During her reign as Miss Universe Pageant 2017

After the week-long festivities to celebrate her win in her native South Africa, the 22-year-old beauty queen traveled to India, Thailand, Lebanon, the Philippines, Ecuador, and others.

During her reign, she took her Unbreakable campaign onto the international stage. Demi-Leigh spearheaded the campaign in 2017, about a month after winning the Miss South Africa pageant.

The initiative was in response to her experience of a carjacking incident, which would have gone south had it not been for the self-defense training and the quick thinking of the beauty queen.

In addition to empowering women to defend themselves physically and mentally against abuse, Demi Leigh is a big advocate of equal pay for women.

At the tail end of her reign, she attended a charity gala fashion show in the Philippines, which was hosted to support Hope 4 Change.

After passing on her crown to Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, Demi-Leigh Nel Peters promised to continue her philanthropic work. A promise that she continues to keep five years after her win!
