She began acting when she was four years old and became a model. Her parents separated when she was 11 years old. By that time, Pia was earning enough money as a model to support the family. She graduated from secondary school in Manila and then went to culinary school.
In addition to modeling, she had early success as an actress. She starred in a Filipino TV show called ” K2BU“, a concert show called “ASAP,” a romantic drama called “Your Song,” a drama called “Sa Piling Mo.” and a sitcom called “Bora.”
She broke into movie roles in 2003, with a small part in Kung Ako Na Lang. In 2004, she acted in All My Life; in 2006, she was in “All About Love.” She then became a stylist and makeup artist. She also served as a correspondent for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. It was then she decided to pursue pageant competition seriously.
Pageants
At that time, the most famous pageant in the Philippines was the Binibining Pilipinas. A Pia entered that pageant three separate times. In 2013, she was the first runner-up. Pia joined again in 2014. She made it to the top 15 of the competition.
Some mild controversy may have prevented her from advancing further that year during that pageant. She answered the pageant questions in Tagalog, and some international judges seemed to have held this against her.
In 2015, she entered Binibining again; this time, she won and was named Miss Universe Philippines 2015 – as well as Miss Cream Silk 2015.
Miss Universe 2015
She represented the Philippines in the Miss Universe pageant. On December 20, 2015. in Las Vegas, Nevada. During the first round, Pia wore a white “capiz terno” with a matching fan and headpiece as her national costume. The dress was an ornate mermaid-style traditional Filipina dress adorned with “capiz” shells. These shells are a type of oyster, and they allowed her dress to glisten. ( Her gown and headpiece are displayed at the shop of its designer, Albert Andrada.)
Pia Wurtzbach impressed the judges and spectators in a black and white bikini in the swimsuit competition. She wore a red sleeveless crepe de chine gown for the evening competition. After the preliminary contests, she was elevated to the top 15. For the final night, she wore a “serpentina” gown (made by the same designer as her national costume.)
When initially announcing the winner, host Steve Harvey mistakenly declared Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez as the winner. Ariadna was crowned and began to take her victory walk, but Steve Harvey returned to the stage and announced he had made a mistake – and Pia Wurtzbach would correctly be the title holder and crowned Miss Universe 2015
Pia Wurtzbach was the first Filipina to win a Miss Universe in over 40 years (the previous Filipina winner being crowned back in 1969.)
