Early Life
Karen Ibasco is half Chinese, half Filipino, and 100% exceptional. Born in Manila in 1990 and more usually known by her middle name of Karen, she has had a unique and inspirational career as a physicist and pageant.
She is fluent in Chinese, Tagalog, and English and studied at Hope Christian High School in Manila.
After graduating High School, she attended the University of Santo Tomas, where she obtained multiple degrees in Physics, and associated sciences, including a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Applied Physics with a major in Medical Physics.
She graduated Cum Laude with both degrees. She also taught at the University College of Science and worked as a medical physicist at St. Luke’s Medical Center, Global City.
Pageants
As a testament to the fact that beauty and brains can co-exist, Karen entered the world of pageantry in 2015. She joined the Ms. Shape PH contest, where she placed first runner-up, and in 2016 she represented the City of Manila at the Binibining Pilipinas in Quezon City.
Although she didn’t place, she received a good grounding in pageantry and an understanding of how to use pageants to promote causes that she is passionate about.
As a physicist, she understood energy consumption issues and their environmental effects. So she decided to use pageantry, which is incredibly popular and influential in the Philippines, to promote her agenda surrounding the need to bring attention to climate change and its impact on the world.
Miss Earth Philippines 2017
In 2017 she joined the Miss Philippines Earth tournament, where she impressed both the judges and the public with her understanding of the impact of climate change on the Philippines and the Earth in general.
During the question and answer portion, she expressed gratitude that the Philippines had signed the Paris Treaty and called for a carbon tax to raise investment in renewable energy.
She also showed that she understood the importance of social media and the need for people to educate themselves in spotting and filtering out fake news to become better informed.
After winning the competition that year and receiving the crown as Miss Earth Philippines 2017, Karen Ibasco earned the right to represent her country at the Miss Earth 2017 competition.
Miss Earth 2017
Karen went on to win that competition, becoming the 4th Filipina to hold the title of Miss Earth. Working her way through the stages of the competition, she earned her place in the top 8 contestants.
At that stage of the competition, contestants drew their questions from a fishbowl to ascertain that they could speak on subjects they were not previously prepared for.
For example, she was given a question on Biodiversity. She showed that she deeply understood the importance of the subject matter and how essential it was to achieve and maintain balance nationally and globally.
During the question and answer portion, the top 5 contestants were all asked the same question to consider what was the biggest enemy of Mother Earth.
Karen used this portion of the competition to lay the blame firmly on “us,” the population, urging people to educate themselves and shake off their apathy, saying that even the most minor steps contributed to the significant change.
Post-Winning Miss Earth
She has given Ted talks, represented the country at international conferences, and spearheaded campaigns against single-use plastics to protect the oceans.
Even after contracting the Covid Virus in 2019, she used her social influence and skills to bring attention to the disease and spread survival tips and techniques to the population.
Working hard on environmental awareness and being sent as representative for her country and the planet at multiple conventions seems to take up almost all of her time.
Special Recognition
As Miss Earth, Karen continued her advocacy for protecting the planet. She was personally congratulated by the President of the Philippines, Joseph Estrada.
In addition, she received many accolades from the Senate and Congress, recognizing her outstanding commitment to environmental issues and her importance as a representative of her country and its ideals.
Personal
Her private life seems personal, and she still appears to be single.
However, Karen is still active in using her Social Media skills and influence to inspire the younger generations to achieve their dreams and to become aware of the need to protect and save the planet.
