Formative years
Harnaaz was born in the village of Kohalin and raised in a Jat Sikh family. In 2006 her family moved to England and returned two years later to Chandigarh. She grew up there, went to public school, and got a Ba from a post-graduate Government College for girls.
Her native language is Punjabi; she is fluent in English and Hindu. Miss Sandhu studied for a master’s degree in public administration before winning the Miss Universe 2021 title. Her father is a realtor; her mother is a gynecologist; her older brother Harnoor Singh is a musician.
Competitions
Harnaaz began competing as a teenager and almost immediately had success at age 17; she won the Miss Chandigarh in 2018 and the Max energy India competition. She was reluctant to tell her father when she first entered a pageant competition. It was only later that she informed him of her participation after winning. He has been supportive of her decision.
In August of 2021, judges shortlisted her as a top 50 semi-finalist in the Miss Diva pageant; she was later confirmed as a top 20 semi-finalist and would perform on live TV. In the preliminary competition, she won the most beautiful skin award and became a finalist in Miss Beachbody, Miss Talent, Miss Photogenic, and Miss Beautiful Smile. At the end of the event, they crowned her the winner of Miss Diva 2021, India’s national pageant. She then had the honor and the right to represent Miss India in the 70th Edition of the Miss Universe Pageant.
On December 13th, 2021, she became Miss Universe, held in Elite Israel; she bested 80 other contestants representing beautiful women worldwide. She became the third entry from India to wear the crown. It was given to her by Steve Harvey and outgoing titleholder Andre Meza.
Throughout her reign
While fulfilling her duties as Miss Universe 2021, she has traveled to Israel and various other cities worldwide, including but not limited to the USA, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, South Africa, and her home country of India.

At a press conference in her hometown, Harnaaz Sandhu shared that she has a condition called Celiac disease, described as one with gluten sensitivity, a protein found in grains like wheat, barley, and rye, thus contributing to bloating and gaining weight.
