1. Early Life and Education

As mentioned, Catriona Gray was born in Australia, in Cairns (in Far North Queensland’). Her mother’s name is Normita Ragas Magnayon, and her father is Ian Gray. While her father is a Scottish-Australian, her mother has roots in Albay in the Philippines.

Her parents got Catriona enrolled in a martial arts class when she was 8, which led to her earning a Black Belt’ at 12.

She completed her high school at the Trinity Anglican School’ where she discovered her love for singing, a talent that earned her the lead singer’s position in the school’s jazz band.’


Gray learned math, drama, and science apart from acting, singing, and dancing at school. However, despite earning a Certificate in Outdoor Recreation, Catriona cited her height of 5ft 10in (178 CM) as the reason for not being attracted to sports.

Soon after graduating from high school, Gray’s family moved to the Philippines, where she began to work as a model (commercial) in Manila. She completed her Master’s in Music Therapy from Boston’s Berklee College of Music through an online program.

2. Pageantry

Catriona Gray entered the pageantry world at the tender age of 5 by entering and winning the 1999 Little Miss Philippines pageant held in Sydney. Her height played a crucial role in her modeling career. While working as a model, she learned how beauty pageants could make a difference in eradicating poverty.

That is when Catriona focused on competing and winning a beauty pageant. In 2016, she won the title of Miss World Philippines’. Soon after, she participated in the Miss World 2016′ pageant, where she placed in the Top 5′, with Stephanie Del Valle (Puerto Rico) winning the crown.

3. Miss Universe 2018

Despite failing to win the Miss World 2016′ crown, Catriona continued to pursue her dream of winning an international beauty pageant. She joined Binibining Pilipinas’ in 2017 to train for the upcoming international beauty pageant. In 2018, after receiving training in public speaking and pasarela walk, Catriona went on to represent the Philippines in the Miss Universe pageant. After a tough competition, Catriona Gray was finally crowned Miss Universe 2018′.

4. Post-Miss Universe

Catriona was named the Philippine Red Cross ambassador in 2020 during the rise of the pandemic. Later, Gray found her way into the entertainment world, hosting and performing on Sunday Noontime Live!’ on TV5.

Today, Gray runs an Academy in collaboration with the Nas Academy’, where she shares lessons she learned during her time in a beauty pageant.

5. Advocacy and Issues

Catriona has advocated for women’s rights, OTOP or One Town, One product’ project (Trade and Industry Department, Philippines), and indigenous culture. As a result, gray was announced as an Ambassador for Arts’ by the NCCA (Philippines) in 2020 and 2021.

In addition, she was named Ambassador for Indigenous Handicrafts’ by the Trade and Industry Department of the Philippines in 2020.


Gray was involved in the Red-tagging issue in the Philippines because of an incident in October 2020. As a result, she was warned by the military officials to stop supporting Gabriel and other such groups, which could result in her being involved in the Marxist-Leninist- Maoist New People’s Army’ activities, which could lead to life risks for her.


Catriona’s attorney retaliated by saying that such statements were uncalled for and that Gray would continue to champion any social cause that would uplift women’s lives.

6. Personal life

From 2012 to 2019, Catriona was in a romantic relationship with Clint Bondad, an actor with Filipino-German roots. After their relationship ended in 2020, Gray started dating another actor, Sam Milby, of Filipino-American origin.

7. Special Awards and Nominations

Apart from winning national and international beauty pageants, Catriona won the Global Achievement by a Filipino Award in 2019 at the 49th Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation Box Office Entertainment Awards alongside Manny Pacquiao.
