Early Life and Education
Angelia Ong’s full name is Angelia Gabrena Paglicawan Ong. In Philippine naming customs, children keep both the mother’s last name and the father’s name. Therefore, Paglicawan is her maternal family name, and Ong is her paternal family name.
She is half Chinese and half Filipino. Angelia Ong was born on June 27, 1990, in Iloilo City, where she lived until she graduated from college.
Then, in 2011, she moved to Manila, the Philippines’ capital.
Here, she pursued a degree in Marketing Management and successfully graduated from the De La Salle College of Saint Benilde in 2016.
Pageantry
In 2009, Angelia Ong participated in StarStruck, which is a reality talent competition show on Philippine TV. On this show, she only made it into the top 60, but she was undeterred and pursued pageantry further.
Two years later, Angelia represented her hometown Iloilo City at the Binibining Pilipinas 2011. Again, she did not make it into the top 15 but won a special award as the Face of the Bb. Pilipinas 2011.
Her highest placement before Miss Earth was when she was second runner-up at Miss Manila in 2014. It shows that not giving up was the right thing to do when, in 2015, she finally asserted herself against 37 other contestants and won the right to represent the Philippines at the Miss Earth 2015 pageant.
Miss Earth 2015
The Miss Earth 2015 pageant was held at the Marx Halle in Vienna, Austria. In this pageant, Angelia Ong prevailed against 82 other competitors.
To many, her win was a special surprise since the previous Miss Earth, Jamie Herrell, had also been Filipino, and many people did not think that a contestant from the same country would win twice in a row.
During the final Q&A round, she answered with her slogan, “We will because we can.” This has also been her tagline during the Miss Philippines Earth tournament, and it summarizes her optimism and her unwillingness to back down when things get complicated.
“I am a fighter”
Angelia Ong
She received several commendations from the Philippine government for her win. The Office of the President, the Senate, and the House of Representatives congratulated her, mainly because the succession of two Filipino Miss Earths in a row was a great honor for the country.
Post Miss Earth
Until today, Angelia Ong is involved in the beauty and fashion world. This year, she attended the Paris Fashion Week 2022 and the Bench Fashion Week, focusing on Filipino designers.

She uses the opportunities that the title of Miss Earth offers to her to advocate for causes that aim to preserve the environment and prevent the disastrous consequences of climate change.
She has been involved in several environmental projects and initiatives. In 2015, she joined the Ecowaste Coalition and launched a campaign to motivate people to use safe and non-toxic materials to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
In 2016, she hosted the opening ceremony of the Asia-Pacific Forestry Week. Later that year, she was involved in a project to plant one million tree seedlings across Metropolitan Manila. She also led the Earth Day 2016 celebrations with Philippine Senator Cynthia Villar.
To learn how to effectively advocate for environmental issues and use her platform for good causes, Angelia Ong completed Climate Reality Leadership Corps training under Al Gore, former Vice President of the United States.
