Early Life

Growing up in Hawaii, there was a substantial Filipino American population, and they all talked about Filipino dishes and cultural things.

Her father is Filipino. Her dad lived in Pampanga, Angeles City, and so did her family on her father’s side. They’re all Filipino Families.

She never visited the Philippines but plans to; it’s on her bucket list. Her mother is Mexican from San Jose, California. She is very proud of Filipina-Mexican culture.

Education

Kiana attended King Kamehameha III Elementary School and Lahainaluna High School, graduating with Honors.
She earned a degree in civil engineering from the University of Hawaii and later worked as an environmental engineer in California. After returning to Hawaii, she became a construction engineer.

Miss USA Sisterhood

She believes Miss USA is a Sisterhood and loves connecting with women from across the country and having fun.
On a trip to Cancun, Mexico, she took a couple of girls who had never paddleboarded before and taught them how.

She is very open, loves having good conversations, gets to know people personally, and enjoys new experiences.
She tries to bring her best package and be her best self in the competition. “So I’m trying to do the best I can, which has nothing to do with the other girls.”

One of her competitors, Tiffany from California, went to the University of Hawaii, so they have shared experiences and she has become a full-of-energy friend.

Kiana enjoyed meeting all the contestants and spoke highly of them. She commented how impressed she was by the sincerity of other states like Illinois, New Hampshire, and Indiana. Those girls are so sweet and genuine.

Life after being crowned Miss Hawaii USA

Kiana said in an interview.” It’s a blessing; there have been so many different opportunities.” Kiana has travelled from Texas to California all over America.

She saw new places but had never been to most of these places in her entire life. She grew up on an island and did not see different cultures within the United States.” There’s so much diversity, the most incredible experience of my life.”

She also thanks Hensel Phelps Construction Company, her employer, for being so supportive and allowing her time to travel.

“I am blessed to work for a company that supports me not only in my career but in my personal endeavors as well. Without their support, I could not have won the Entrepreneurship Award or had the crowd that energized me to perform my best,”

A successful career as a Hawaiian engineer

Kiana-Yamat-engineer

Kiana has a successful career in civil engineering, working in Science and Technology.

Every year, her father would take them to Disneyland on vacation. Disneyland inspired her because she saw how they handled the Arts and Technology and combined them to create the Disney Magic experience.

That inspired her to become an engineer. Learning what it takes to create these rides is more than just fun, and Imagineers inspired her.

She loves working with concrete, so that’s why she’s a civil construction engineer who works in construction instead of trying to pursue Imagineering. But this is what inspired her to become an engineer.

At first, she sacrificed her femininity to conform to the boys’ club. Civil design engineering is a very male-dominated field. She’d been on a construction job site with over fifty males and felt she had to tone down her femininity.

Kiana is now a female role model who has proven and advocated that you don’t need to do that. You can be successful; a woman’s place is where she wants it to be. Of course, as Miss USA, she is showing the world that you don’t have to be overly masculine or overly aggressive to enter construction.

You can be yourself, and you can be just a regular girl who loves what she does.

Weight loss journey

Kiana Yamat weight loss journey

Kiana Yamat most recently got attention because she has lost over 60 lbs. She used to struggle with emotional eating. For those who don’t know, she used to wrestle in high school, and an awful wrestling practice is binge eating after starving yourself to gain a certain weight.

So she would binge, and what that meant for her was emotionally eating. She would binge eat in sadness and binge eat in happiness. It comforted her.

Kiana had some awful news during the pandemic. Her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, and while she has overcome it and is cancer-free, Kiana realized that added stress and her emotional eating were unhealthy.

So, she had to focus on what that meant. She realized she couldn’t keep eating, couldn’t keep doing these dangerous things to herself. She had to think about her family and must be there for herself. So she focussed on how to fix it. First, mental health dealing with stress acknowledged how she felt.

Then, she worked on her physical body. Kiana, a competitive athlete on the wrestling, track, field, and cheerleading teams, re-established her focus in high school. Over a year, she focused on physical fitness, regained healthy habits, and lost 60 pounds.

Kiana Yamat has been crowned Miss Hawaii USA.
